We are seeking a visionary VP of Data Engineering to lead the transformation of our data architecture, governance, and strategy. This executive will address current scaling challenges in our single database architecture while establishing a forward-looking data framework that supports GitLab's growth trajectory.
What you'll do- Develop and execute a comprehensive data strategy that addresses current scaling limitations in our monolithic database architecture
- Lead the unification of metadata across all GitLab platforms, building upon recent successes with gitlab.com datastores
- Design scalable data solutions for both gitlab.com and Dedicated instances
- Partner with product leadership to ensure data considerations are integrated early in product planning
- Build and lead a world-class data engineering team
- Establish enterprise-wide data governance practices and standards
- Create a roadmap for transitioning from ad-hoc data management solutions to robust, scalable systems
- Foster a data-driven culture across the organization
- Proven track record of successfully transforming legacy data architectures to modern, scalable solutions
- Experience working with large-scale, distributed database systems
- Strong understanding of data architecture principles and best practices
- Experience unifying disparate data sources across multiple platforms
- Strategic thinker with the ability to balance immediate technical needs with long-term vision
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders
- Background in managing technical teams in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
- Prior experience at a rapidly scaling technology company
- Knowledge of DevOps platforms and the software development lifecycle
- Familiarity with modern data engineering tools and frameworks
- Experience leading organization-wide data transformation initiatives
- Track record of implementing data solutions that directly impact business outcomes
