About the Role


We’re seeking a Senior UX Researcher to join the team to refine machine-learning powered products on the Online Grocery team. In this role, you will be deeply involved in every aspect of the research process, from design to execution and analysis. The Online Grocery team is focused on building and growing the best online grocery experience.

The Instacart Research team is dedicated to understanding the future of online grocery shopping and how current behaviors and needs may be rapidly evolving. We generate insights that drive product strategy and innovation. We are a collaborative and tight-knit team, and we partner with product, design, data science, and engineering to help build products that solve real problems for people and support Instacart’s mission.

About the Job


  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative research to understand user needs, pain points, and expectations around ML-powered features.
  • Design studies to evaluate the usability and effectiveness of ML outputs (e.g., recommendations, predictions, or generated content).
  • Translate research insights into principles and guidelines for training and evaluation data to help train models. 
  • Establish feedback loops for continuous improvement of ML models based on user insights.
  • Collaborate with data science and other functions on experiments to validate changes and measure impact.
  • Work with designers to create interfaces that explain and visualize ML outputs in a way users can understand and trust.
  • Synthesize findings into actionable insights that propel product development.

Minimum Qualifications


  • At least 5 years of professional experience in UX research
  • Expertise in qualitative and quantitative research methods, including usability testing, interviews, surveys, and data analysis.
  • Experience designing for ML-powered products with millions of active users, such as recommendation systems or chatbots.
  • Knowledge of ethical AI principles and practices. 
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate research findings into actionable insights for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Can speak to experience managing multiple simultaneous projects
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Psychology, Cognitive Science, HCI, Statistics, Data Science, Anthropology, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Masters or PhD in psychology, cognitive science, HCI, Statistics, Data Science, Anthropology, or a related field
